Why I am Different
As a counselor, I feel that I have a diverse background and training for working with all people and programs. My skills as a counselor has prepared me for the next step of becoming a school leader. The most important counseling skills that will guide me to becoming a better leader are my ability to promote positive relationships, model advocacy, recognize the need for improvement and facilitate the change process, collaborate with other educators, community leaders, and parents, and utilize current literature and research. The key to the success of any school counselor is their ability to build trusting relationships with students and other members of the school community. In order to be a counselor you need to be solution focused. I am committed to the process of change which has always guided me in my actions, program development and practice.
I am also a teacher in the classroom helping to teach students skills about decision making, career planning and getting along with others. I collect, analyze and interpret data to ensure students are achieving the skills they need for success. I use this data to collaborate with teachers and administrators about best practices and methods to eliminate the achievement gap or raise test scores in our schools. This unique training gives me the tools to become a strong leader in any school.
Education to me is about teaching children to grow into adults who can think and will be able to take responsibility in this world. Education should truly be a lifetime experience for our children not just limited to their youth. I feel like I make a difference as a school counselor but I know I can make a bigger impact as a leader in education. My goal has always been to inspire and motivate others.
